Certification

Completing the Certification process is an easy, informative, and interactive way for individual laboratories and groups to discover the ways that they can save energy, resources, and more while conducting their research.

MIT’s Certification Program is comprised of three Levels. Labs can be certified through any Level(s) depending on their interests. A presentation of findings and recommendations is given to lab when the certification process is completed,

  • Level 1: MIT Safe & Sustainable Labs Assessment – The assessment focuses on asking questions and making observations to inform users of immediate potential modifications and gain intel on potential feedback to Facilities, Utilities and Campus Construction.
  • Level 2: My Green Lab Certification – My Green Lab Certification is considered the global standard for laboratory sustainability best practices. It covers 14 topics related to energy, water, waste, chemistry/materials and engagement. The level of certification is determined by the percentage of sustainable practices that the lab has adopted. Bronze 40%; Silver 50%; Gold 60%; Platinum 70%; Green 80%. Based on the responses, My Green Lab makes recommendations on steps the lab could take to adopt sustainable practices.
  • Level 3: Lab Energy Assessment – A two-week long plug load analysis, which provides detailed equipment-specific information on power consumption.
