Toxic Gas Monitoring

Gas monitoring may be required when highly toxic, toxic, flammable, or pyrophoric (spontaneously combustible in air) gas use is planned. Under some conditions, oxygen monitoring is required in locations with compressed and liquefied inert gases and where there is a potential to create an oxygen deficient environment. Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) monitoring may be required in locations where flammable gases and chemicals are used.

During new design and construction projects, the monitor type, alarm set points, automated actions, and notifications are determined by the project design review team. This is based on MIT EHS and Facilities specifications, code requirements, building infrastructure, and research needs.  The calibration and maintenance of such systems is the responsibility of the department, lab, or center (DLC).

Existing labs that wish to bring hazardous compressed gases into another lab should contact EHS at (617) 452-3477 or environment@mit.edu to determine if monitoring is required and what options are available.
